Bloch, Schelomo-Rhapsodie Hébraïque for Violoncello and Orchestra

Mahler, Symphony No. 4 in G major

Mahler’s symphonies aren’t always massive. His Fourth Symphony opens with a jingling of sleighbells before flutes call like skylarks and a melody straight out of Mozart swings cheerfully in. But it’s not all sweetness and light, and the award-winning young Korean conductor Shiyeon Sung is sure to find both tears and pitch black humour on the way to Mahler’s wonderfully unexpected finale a vision of heaven, seen through the eyes of a child. It’s an enchanting way to end a concert that opens with a very different kind of spiritual beauty: Bloch’s impassioned Schelomo, inspired by the Song of Songs and performed tonight by SPO's former principal cello Yeonsun Joo.
