HUMOR IN MUSIC: FROM HAYDN TO SHOSTAKOVICH

August 30 8PM, Wednesday / Seoul Arts Center, Concert Hall

Hannu Lintu, conductor

Alexandre Baty, trumpet

Haydn, Symphony No. 103 in E-flat major

Weinberg, Trumpet Concerto in B-flat major, Op. 94

Shostakovich, Symphony No. 1 in F minor, Op. 10

Youth meets Experience. As Joseph Haydn got older, his creative spirit just became ever younger and more inventive and his 103rd symphony might be the finest he ever wrote. Dmitri Shostakovich, meanwhile, was a young man in a hurry, and his riotous First Symphony positively bristles with enthusiasm, imagination and wit. Together, Haydn and Shostakovich make the ideal starting point to explore the fascinating musical world of Mieczyslaw Weinberg the Polish-Russian composer who confronted the tyranny of both the Nazis and the Soviets, and wrote symphonies, film scores and circus music. Fantastic, virtuosic and outrageously sarcastic, his Trumpet Concerto will make a compelling showcase for soloist Alexandre Baty and our acclaimed Finnish guest conductor, Hannu Lintu.
