Soviet officials called it an “optimistic tragedy”. Shostakovich simply called it his Tenth Symphony. Dark, tense, packed with secret messages and featuring at its centre a terrifying scherzo that might or might not be a musical portrait of Stalin himself; what’s certain is that Shostakovich’s Tenth is one of the greatest of all 20th century symphonies. Critics have described the eminent Taiwanese conductor Shao Chia-Lu as “a master of nuance”, so who better to seek out Shostakovich’s inner meaning - and to support the wonderful young Italian pianist Beatrice Rana in the ebb and flow of Tchaikovsky’s mighty and much-loved First Piano Concerto? Rana will bring both stellar pianism and an affecting tenderness to this ultimate Russian romantic showpiece.
