Heroes struggle, gods rise and fall, and love transcends death itself, all swept along by some of the most intoxicating music ever composed. But you haven’t heard Wagner until you’ve heard him performed live. In this concert, conductor Christoph Eschenbach and the great Wagnerian baritone Matthias Goerne surrender to Wagner’s power twice over, from the deathless passion of Tristan und Isolde to the final scene of Die Walküre: an overwhelming musical depiction of a god pushed to the very limits of emotion. After that, the gypsy dances of Brahms’s First Piano Quartet will come as light relief: in Schönberg’s vivid orchestration, it’s an absolute riot!
