“I was born in Korea and project that culture, but I developed musically in Europe” said Isang Yun. “I don't need to organize or separate elements of the cultures. I am a unity”. No matter how original the sounds they create, all composers have their personal roots, and leave a unique legacy. In Yun’s centenary year, we celebrate his music alongside a new work by Yie Eun Chun – and commemorate the death in 2016 of the great French modernist Pierre Boulez, with music by two composers who shaped him: Stravinsky and Ravel. Pianist Yookyoung Suck plays twelve of Boulez’s exquisite Notations before Pascal Rophé conducts the same pieces, arranged for ensemble: a masterclass in imagination and colour.
