SPO PERFORMS TCHAIKOVSKY SYMPHONY NO. 6 'PATHETIQUE'

October 19  8PM, Thursday / Seoul Arts Center, Concert Hall

Vassily Sinaisky, conductor

Stephen Hough, piano

Schreker, Ekkehard, Op. 12 (Asian premiere)

Rachmaninoff, Piano Concerto No. 1 in F-sharp minor, Op.1 (1919 version)

Tchaikovsky, Symphony No. 6, Op. 74 ‘Pathetique’

Maestro Vasily Sinaisky is the Russian powerhouse who used to head Moscow’s fabled Bolshoi Theatre. Stephen Hough is a phenomenon: a piano virtuoso whose laser-like brightness and precision is matched by an intellect so powerful that he’s been awarded a MacArthur Foundation “Genius Grant”. Combine the two in Rachmaninoff’s youthful First Piano Concerto, and this is likely to be a performance to remember. Two landmarks of late Romanticism set the context: Tchaikovsky’s searing Pathétique symphony is a musical autobiography at its most tuneful, most direct and most overwhelmingly emotional, and Sinaisky will quite simply tear its heart out. Schreker’s stormy Ekkehard-Overture of 1903is less familiar but Sinaisky believes in it every bit as strongly.
