Ever heard fireworks in sound? 18th century Europe loved the sound of a world-class voice doing things that sounded impossible, and tonight the superb Russian soprano Julia Lezhneva lights up the sky in showpieces by Handel, Vivaldi and Mozart – music to pierce the heart and dazzle the ear. She’s supported by baroque music specialist Paul Goodwin, a specially-slimmed down Seoul Philharmonic and pianist Mikhail Antonenko, playing music that would have originally been played by Mozart himself. And then Goodwin whirls us off on a Grand Tour of baroque Europe, from Purcell’s delightfully quirky take on the legend of King Arthur to Telemann’s exuberant celebration of the bustling port of Hamburg: music with limitless horizons.
