Vienna in 1904 was a city on the brink: the glittering capital of a doomed empire, waltzing towards the abyss while Klimt and Freud explored new depths of human consciousness. And towering above it all was Gustav Mahler. His epic Fifth Symphony is charged with all the drama, anguish and splendour of that incredible era – and its Adagietto might just be the sweetest love-letter ever written by a composer to his young wife. Conductor in Residence Markus Stenz understands Mahler’s world, and he opens with music by two of Mahler’s disciples: sheer lusciousness from Franz Schreker, and the moonlit beauty of Berg’s Seven Early Songs, performed by Sumi Hwang.
