FROM GLOOM TO BLOOM: ELTS CONDUCTS DVOŘÁK
THU May 24, 2018 20:00 | LOTTE Concert Hall
Olari Elts, conductor
Antoine Tamestit, viola
Enescu, Romanian Rhapsody No. 1 in A major
Walton, Viola Concerto
Dvořák, Symphony No. 8 in G major, Op. 88
“Romania without its gypsies would be like a forest without birds”, the saying goes – and Romania’s greatest composer George Enescu poured all the passion of gypsy music into his sparkling Rhapsody. It’s a wonderfully stirring way to open a concert that finishes with Dvořák’s Eighth Symphony - another outpouring of melody and colour, packed with the birdsong and folk dances of Dvořák’s beloved Czech countryside. But even the brightest sunlight needs shade, and conductor Olari Elts is joined by the eminent French viola player Antoine Tamestit to play William Walton’s superb Viola Concerto. Moody, sophisticated and songful, it’s a piece in which emotion runs surprisingly deep: a perfect contrast to the pure sunshine of Dvořák and Enescu.
