On a sacred mountain high above the world, the heavens open and a vision of transcendent light and love descends. That’s how Wagner begins his opera Lohengrin, and it’s how Seoul Philharmonic Conductor in Residence Markus Stenz opens this concert of Romantic music at its most personal – and poetic. Norwegian cellist Truls Mørk has a special connection to Elgar’s bittersweet Cello Concerto: music of woodsmoke and autumn colours, that very definitely doesn’t keep a stiff upper lip. And Robert Schumann hides a tender lovesong to his wife Clara amidst the storms and drama of his Fourth Symphony. Visions of beauty and truth from composers – and performers – who aren’t afraid to wear their heart on their sleeve.
