Bartók, Concerto for Orchestra, Sz. 116

 Total Duration: 100mins(incl. intermission)

Exiled from all he loved, Béla Bartók was lonely, penniless and ill. His response? The most brilliant shout of joy in all of 20th century music. Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra is far more than merely the ultimate work-out for a virtuoso orchestra at the top of its game. It’s a celebration of life itself, tingling with spicy colours and punchy dance-tunes. Every performance tells a story, and our Slovenian guest conductor Marko Letonja has filled this concert with stories – from Ravel’s tales of Mother Goose and her fairy-tale friends, to the Rococo Variations: Tchaikovsky’s deliciously playful tribute to the music of the 18th century. The distinguished Hungarian cellist Miklós Perényi gives it a dash of paprika tonight.
