Prokofiev, Symphony No. 5 in B-flat major, Op. 100

total duration 110mins(incl. intermission)

Moscow, January 1945: and as Sergei Prokofiev waited, baton poised, to begin his new symphony, every cannon in the city thundered out in deafening salute. Prokofiev’s Fifth was forged in the fires of the Great Patriotic War. But he dedicated it to “the greatness of the human spirit”, and from serene beginning to headlong finish, it’s still one of 20thcentury music’s most gripping adventures. Osmo Vänskä, the acclaimed music director of the Minnesota Orchestra, leads the advance tonight; first, though, there’s high drama from Johannes Brahms, and our Artist-in-Residence Ian Bostridge shares four of Mahler’s songs from Des Knaben Wunderhorn: each one a miniature fairy-tale of innocence, experience, and pitch-black humour.
