Tchaikovsky, String Sextet in D minor ‘Souvenir de Florence’, Op. 70

Total Duration: around 90mins(incl. intermission)

They call chamber music “the music of friends”, and when you hear six Seoul Philharmonic string players come together in Tchaikovsky’s Souvenir de Florence, you’ll understand why. It’s music that simply bursts into life: a postcard from sunny Italy, and some of the happiest, most life-affirming and most melodious music even Tchaikovsky ever wrote. But this all-Russian programme begins with two neglected masterworks by a great pair of musical friends. Rachmaninoff was the finest pianist of his age; his lifelong confidant Nicolai Medtner was more reticent (in fact he was known as “the Russian Brahms”). But they both poured all their emotion into their chamber music. Expect grandeur, melancholy, and tune after glorious tune.
