SEOUL PHILHARMONIC PLAYS TCHAIKOVSKY VIOLIN CONCERTO
Fri June 15, 2018 20:00 | LOTTE Concert Hall
Vasily Petrenko, conductor
James Ehnes, violin
Tchaikovsky, Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 35
Rachmaninoff, Symphony No. 2 in E minor, Op. 27
From Russia with love: fleeing from a broken heart, Tchaikovsky wrote his Violin Concerto on the sunlit shores of Lake Geneva, but its flying, foot-stamping finale is as Russian as vodka and caviare. And with his luminous tone and lightning-fast fingers, there’s no more stylish interpreter than the Canadian virtuoso James Ehnes – especially when he’s accompanied by Vasily Petrenko, who’s got this music in his blood. Meanwhile Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Second Symphony is like an epic Russian novel: a sweeping emotional drama, filled with winter storms, huge sunlit vistas and mile after mile of unforgettable melodies. Is this the ultimate romantic symphony? We just know that it sounds wonderful, and we can’t wait to share it.
