The orchestral works of Jean Sibelius are landmarks of 20th century music. Rooted in the nature and folklore of his native Finland, with their soaring melodies and majestic scale they’re as fresh, as elemental, and as stirring as the Scandinavian landscape itself. Finnish conductor Osmo Vänskä is arguably Sibelius’s pre-eminent living interpreter: he begins with Sibelius’s great patriotic hymn Finlandia before joining InMo Yang in the fire and ice of the Violin Concerto. Sibelius’s Sixth Symphony evokes the Finnish forests in some of the most serenely beautiful music he ever wrote. And then Vänskä reaches journey’s end with the monumental Seventh Symphony: a life’s work brought to completion in a single, mighty gesture.
