R. Strauss, Don Juan, Op. 20
R. Strauss, Horn Concerto No. 2 in E-flat major, TrV 283
---------------- intermission 15mins ----------------------
Schubert, Symphony No. 9 in C major, D.944 Great
Total Duration 110mins(incl. intermission)
Some listeners call it the “Great C major”. Musicians call it the “Great C monster”! But both are agreed – there’s nothing in all music to compare with Schubert’s majestic final symphony. Hear it as a summer journey through a sunlit world of melody, or as a youthful genius throwing down a challenge to Beethoven himself. But do hear it, because under maestro Christian Vásquez – a graduate of Venezuela’s famous El Sistema program - you’ll never experience it played with more energy, or joy. First, though, Strauss’s Don Juan tells a tale of swashbuckling adventure, before Stefan Dohr (the Berlin Philharmonic’s principal horn) plays Strauss’s serene Second Horn Concerto, written in the darkest days of the Second Word War.
