A violin sighs quietly in the twilight, a piano trails behind, and a horn begins an old, sad song. Johannes Brahms discovered that when you put these three instruments together, you create a special kind of poetry, and his beautiful, intensely personal Horn Trio is the climax of this chamber programme led by our special guest, international star horn player Stefan Dohr. Mozart’s Horn Quintet, meanwhile, combines knockabout humour with real poetry. Dohr leads the fun today; before Martinů’s exuberant, multicoloured Nonet, and a close encounter with a headstrong young genius called Beethoven - and some of the most entertaining music ever written for a piano and four wind players.
