Zemlinsky, The Mermaid
Total Duration about 110 mins(incl. intermission)
In Vienna they say that “Asia begins at the Landstrasse”, and for centuries, Austria’s capital has been a meeting place of past and future, east and west. In collaboration with the supreme master of the contemporary sheng, Wu Wei, the Viennese-born composer Bernd Richard Deutsch continues that multicultural tradition with a striking new concerto – receiving only its second performance, just days after its world premiere in Europe. Baldur Brönnimann frames it with two stunning but neglected Viennese masterpieces. Webern’s Passacaglia is a powerful premonition of a coming storm. Zemlinsky’s The Mermaid, meanwhile, retells the story of The Little Mermaid in lush, luminous colours. If you enjoy Mahler and Strauss, we think you’ll love this.
