Four horns throw down the challenge: and as the orchestra launches into a melody you’ll never forget, the grand piano matches it note for note. From then on, the gloves are off: there’s no more stirring contest between piano and orchestra than Tchaikovsky’s epic First Piano Concerto, and with the sensational Behzod Abduraimov – described by one critic as “the most perfectly accomplished pianist of his generation” – at the keyboard, it’s a far from unequal battle. Markus Stenz follows it with two more Russian composers exploring the outer reaches of the human soul: Rachmaninoff’s hauntingly beautiful The Isle of the Dead and Scriabin’s psychedelic Poem of Ecstasy – music that ravishes the senses even while it raises the roof.
