As we approach the end of the season, a celebration – and musical celebrations don’t get much grander than Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture, an explosive, uproarious musical depiction of Napoleon’s defeat in Russia. It’s not easy to follow that – unless, like us, you’ve got the world’s finest flute player. We’re thrilled to welcome Emmanuel Pahud (described by one critic as “mesmerising”) to play two astonishingly different concertos: a modern masterpiece by Elliott Carter, and Mozart’s exuberant Second Concerto. Pahud will make them both catch fire. And finally Thierry Fischer whisks us all off to the Vienna of everyone’s dreams for the luxurious splendour, glowing romance and endless, intoxicating waltz melodies of Richard Strauss’s gorgeous Der Rosenkavalier.
Swiss conductor Thierry Fischer has been Music Director of the Utah Symphony since 2009, recently extended to 2022.
