Thierry Fischer
(2017~2020) Principal Guest Conductor, Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra(2017~2020) Music Director, Utah Symphony Music Director, São Paulo Symphony Orchestra (from 2020) Honorary Guest Conductor, Nagoya Philharmonic OrchestraThierry Fischer has been Principal Guest Conductor of the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra(SPO) from 2017 to 2020. He led the orchestra’s interim period while music director was absent since 2016. Together with Markus Stenz, Conductor-in-Residence of the SPO, Fischer has been giving the orchestra artistic vision till Osmo Vänskä started his term as Music Director from 2020.
In his inaugural concert with the SPO was in March 2017, he conducted Brahms’ first symphony. Over the year, he conducted several subscription concerts as well as special concerts, Ars Nova(contemporary series) and Hong Kong tour in October 2017. He started 2018 season with Mendelssohn’s Ein Sommernachtstraum, followed by orchestral and chamber concerts with legendary trumpeter Håkan Hardenberger. In July 2018 Thierry Fischer conducted Bach’s St. John Passion and in October 2018 led Korean premiere of Berstein’s concert version of Candide. In November 2018 Thierry Fischer embarked on European tour with pianist Sunwook Kim performing Beethoven’s Emperor concerto and Berlioz’ Symphonie Fantastique in KKL(Lucern) and Maison de la Radio(Paris). And he wrapped up the season with Beethoven’s Choral symphony as he did in 2017. In 2019 Thierry Fischer’s concerts include Stravinsky’ The Rite of Spring, Prokofiev’s selections from Romeo and Juliet, Saint-Saëns’ third symphony ‘Organ’ and R. Strauss’ suite from Der Rosenkavalier. He started Beethoven’s 250th anniversary in 2020 with Leonidas Kavakos performing Beethoven’s only violin concerto. And he could not join the rest of the season due to the pandemic.
Thierry Fischer has been Music Director of the Utah Symphony since 2009 and in March 2020 he began a new position as Music Director of the São Paulo Symphony. He is also Honorary Guest Conductor of Nagoya Philharmonic Orchestra.
