Soo-Yeoul Choi, born in Seoul, is the Artistic Director and Chief Conductor of Busan Philharmonic Orchestra(BPO), and also is appointed as the very first Principal Guest Conductor of Korean Chamber Orchestra(KCO) from 2021. He has successfully performed the complete tone poems of Richard Strauss with BPO from 2017 to 2019 and is currently performing the complete orchestral works of Maurice Ravel from 2020 to 2022. He has a special affection for the works of composers Isang Yun, Unsuk Chin, and Texu Kim, and has a sense of mission that important contemporary music of this era must be preserved as a performance rather than a score.

After studying under Chi-Yong Chung at the Korea National University of Arts, he moved to Germany and obtained a Performer's Diploma(Konzertexamen) with the highest honors from Dresden University of Arts as a recipient of the DAAD(German Academic Exchange Service) scholarship in arts. He joined the academy hosted by the Ensemble Modern, a global contemporary music organization, and worked in Frankfurt. Afterward, with the Music directorship of Myung-Whun Chung and Unsuk Chin, as composer-in-residence, he worked as Assistant and Associate conductor of Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra for 3 years.

Choi has entered the final of the 50th Besançon International Conductor Competition and has assisted major artists such as Gennady Rozhdestvensky, Christoph Eschenbach, and Peter Eötvös, His conducting engagements include MDR sinfonieorchester Leipzig, Jena Philharmonic, Cologne Chamber, China NCPA, National Taiwan Symphony, Sendai Philharmonic and most major orchestras in Korea. He has been in a close relationship with the National Orchestra of Korea for several years and has been teaching at Seoul National University and Yonsei University College of music. He is currently living in Busan.
