When string players want to unwind, they gather up some friends and play Mendelssohn’s Octet: thirty five minutes of enchantment, romance and sheer, rocketing youthful exuberance from the pen of a 16 year-old genius. So when the SPO invited the phenomenal Italian-German-American violinist Augustin Hadelich to take time out and join us for some chamber music, we were delighted that he suggested the Mendelssohn. There’s also a miniature masterpiece by Schubert, and two solo pieces, too—Ysaÿe’s haunting Ballade and one of the extraordinary Mystery Sonatas that David Lang wrote specially for Augustin Hadelich. Come and join the fun!
