Once upon a time…a mythical being finds an enchanted flute, and summons a dreamworld of magical sounds. Prokofiev turns away from the Russian Revolution and weaves a glittering fairy-tale for orchestra and a high-flying violin. And Modest Mussorgsky visits a picture gallery: and brings gnomes, skulls, wandering minstrels and dancing chickens to fabulous, multicoloured musical life. His Pictures at an Exhibition will make a magnificent climax to a concert that’s all about telling tales and painting pictures, whether Debussy’s ravishing Prélude or Prokofiev’s First Violin Concerto—featuring guest conductor Tughan Sokhiev and the “transcendent” playing of violin superstar Esther Yoo.
