“Music is life” declared Carl Nielsen “—and like it, inextinguishable!” As Europe recovered from war he channeled all his irrepressible spirit into a symphony that sets the force of life itself against the powers of destruction, then lets them battle to the finish. It’s a thrillingly dramatic experience, from one of the 20th century’s most original composers, and our Finnish guest conductor Jukka-Pekka Saraste has this great Scandinavian masterpiece in his blood. That goes double for Sibelius’s Violin Concerto—music of fire, ice and elemental forces, played today by the Augustin Hadelich, a violinist described by critics as “phenomenal”.
