There’s only one way to top an opportunity to hear Håkan Hardenberger, arguably the world‘s greatest living classical trumpeter, in concert. And that’s to hear him in his element; playing alongside the full, resplendent forces of the Seoul Philharmonic’s world-class brass section. Hardenberger demonstrates his poetic gifts in two solos for trumpet and piano, but first (and last) comes a blaze of sheer sonic splendour: Gunther Schuller’s explosive Symphony for Brass of 1950, and Elgar Howarth’s spectacular all-brass version of Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition. Baba Yaga, the Gnome, the Great Gate of Kiev...you’ve heard them before, but never quite like this. Prepare to have your ears dazzled.
