Whips, whistles, sirens and a mouth organ: it’s fair to say that when the great Hungarian modern master György Ligeti set out to write a piano concerto, he made it sound entirely his own! It’s a true 1980s classic, filled with madness, magic and moments of piercing, child-like wisdom and wonder, and no pianist on earth is better-equipped to play it than Pierre-Laurent Aimard: the indomitable French virtuoso who makes new music sound easy. Guest conductor David Robertson sets it – jewel-like – between two luscious, gloriously colourful French showpieces by Debussy and Ravel: prepare to be startled, seduced and swept off your feet.
