When you add an extra cello to a string quartet, something wonderful happens. The music gains an extra dimension – it becomes darker, richer and more lyrical than ever. And that goes double when the extra cellist is Isang Enders, the youthful German-Korean star who takes his name from one of Korea’s greatest modern composers. But the emphasis in this all-Russian chamber concert is very much on the Romantic, as Enders joins a group of SPO musicians to play the dark, passionately emotional Quartet in A minor by Anton Arensky, and the sweet, sunlit String Quintet by Alexander Glazunov: music that seems to sing and dance for pure joy.
