“The symphony should be like the world” said Gustav Mahler “—it should embrace everything!”.
And in his extraordinary Seventh Symphony, he’s as good as his word, taking us on a journey that begins in a boat on a mountain lake, and ends with cowbells jangling and trumpets raising the roof. But along the way there are distant bugles, moonlit serenades and spine-chilling terrors - there’s a reason, after all, why he called the Seventh his “song of the night”. It’s a special favourite of SPO music director Jaap van Zweden: expect him to relish every melody, every flash of humour and every glimpse of beauty.
