“I have slandered the sea!” declared Claude Debussy after composing La Mer - convinced that his notes could never do justice to the full majesty of the ocean. But music-lovers have disagreed, and today, under guest conductor Hugh Wolff, Debussy’s luminous musical seascape crowns a concert charged with fantasy and emotion. Ravel’s luscious waltzes evoke a more elegant age. But Shostakovich’s First Violin Concerto tells a much darker tale, and it has few more powerful champions than Alena Baeva, the superb Luxembourg violinist whose playing has been praised for its “searing intensity and purity of tone”. A debut to cherish.
