“I am become death, the destroyer of worlds”. John Adams’s opera Doctor Atomic tells the story of the Manhattan Project: a drama of humans unlocking the elemental forces of the universe itself, told in music of shattering originality, energy and emotional power. Today David Robertson conducts the Korean premiere of the symphony that Adams created from this electrifying score, and sets it against two sunlit assertions of humanity at its most hopeful. Sibelius’s Seventh Symphony has the beauty and strength of a mountain peak. The phenomenal Kirill Gerstein is the soloist in Brahms’s Second Piano Concerto: a masterpiece as proud as it is tender.
