Alexander Glazunov(1865-1936), Excerpts from Chopiniana(Les Sylphides) for orchestra, Op. 46(1907)

Alexander Glazunov was much fascinated by Chopin’s piano music, and in 1893 published Chopiniana, a suite of orchestral arrangements of four of Chopin’s works. The choreographer Mikhail Fokine, who was inspired by Glazunov’s music, produced the namesake ballet in 1907, with the newly arranged Chopin’s Waltz Op. 64 No. 2 added in the mix. This work became the basis for Les Sylphides performed in Paris by Sergei Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes in 1909. In Les Sylphides, which means “air fairy,” the music from the ballet Chopiniana are mostly replaced except for Polonaise Op. 40 No. 1 and Waltz Op. 64 No. 2, and Diaghilev involved several other orchestral arrangers including Glazunov.

Frédéric Chopin(1810-1849), Piano Concerto No. 2 in F minor, Op. 21(1829~30) *arranged by Pletnev

This “Second” Concerto was the first to be written of Frédéric Chopin’s two piano concertos, but the order was changed when it was published. Chopin composed the concerto in 1829 at the age of 19, and it contains the youthful excitement as in the First Piano Concerto. Chopin, who was a student at the Warsaw Conservatory at the time, fell in love with the soprano Konstancja Gladkowska, who was then attending the same school. It is believed that the romantic feelings were expressed particularly in the slow second movements of the two concertos. It has been repeatedly pointed out by conductors and musicologists who have studied the scores of the two concertos that Chopin was not a proficient at orchestration in his student years. In 1935 Pianist Alfred Cortot presented a new arrangement of the orchestral parts of the Second Concerto.
Mikhail Pletnev, who has been playing this concerto not only as a soloist but also as a conductor, newly composed orchestral parts for both concertos while recording a new album in 2017 with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra and the pianist Daniil Trifonov.

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky
(1840-1893), Excerpts from the ballet Swan Lake, Op. 20(1875~77) *Pletnev special edition

The ballet Swan Lake is the first of Tchaikovsky’s three major ballets. Based on a German folktale, it depicts the love between Princess Odette, who is cursed by the devil and becomes a swan during the day, and Prince Siegfried, who finds her and falls in love with her. If The Sleeping Beauty, a later ballet by the composer, is splendid and The Nutcracker is lighthearted, Swan Lake is dominated by a somewhat plaintive atmosphere. It is now very popular and is being performed in theaters around the world, but the premiere at the Moscow Bolshoi Theater in 1877 turned out to be a flop due to many factors including the lack of preparation. In 1882, five years after the first performance, Tchaikovsky chose six pieces from the ballet and made them into a concert suite, which is irrespective of the development of the plot and centered around friendly melodies. The special edition compiled by the conductor Mikhail Pletnev also consists of six individual pieces, but it focuses on the development of the plot of the original ballet, excluding ‘Danse des petits cygnes’ (Dance of the Little Swans) and ‘Danse Hongroise’ (Hungarian Dance), which have little to do with the process of the plot.
