“Pathétique” means “full of feeling”. No surprises there: Tchaikovsky was a man who lived by his emotions, and all his hopes, his terrors and his passionate love of life went into his heartbreaking and gloriously tuneful final symphony. It takes a supremely committed conductor to do it justice, and our distinguished guest Manfred Honeck certainly won’t stint on that front. First, though, the soprano Sunhae Im opens a box of delights: a selection of songs and arias by Mozart, Dvořák, Górecki and Strauss, each carefully chosen to display her “splendidly bright” (The New York Times) voice at its most magical.
