Imagine weaving music out of thin air. The late Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho could do just that, and the night sky of northern Europe was in her mind when she created the ravishing Ciel d’hiver. Saariaho’s compatriot Hannu Lintu is passionate about her music, and it’ll make an enchanted upbeat to the lush, sun-kissed melodies of Brahm’s great Violin Concerto, played today by one of its most masterly living interpreters, Christian Tetzlaff. Shostakovich’s Fifteenth Symphony inhabits a much darker world, but there’ll be mystery as well as humour when Lintu conducts the enigmatic final symphony of one of the 20th century’s supreme musical chroniclers.
