From its tragic opening to the climactic, worldembracing “Ode to Joy”, Beethoven’s Ninth has never been just another symphony—it’s an emotional experience with the power to change lives. Every performance is a special occasion, and it’s become something of an end-of season tradition for the Seoul Philharmonic. To celebrate his first year as music director, Jaap van Zweden paired it with another celebration of joy: a sparkling four-way concerto from one of the most optimistic composers who ever lived: Beethoven’s teacher and friend Joseph Haydn. Humanity at its best.
