A great city is under siege, and as the bullets fly and bombs explode, the defenders of Leningrad use loudspeakers to blast Shostakovich’s Seventh Symphony, defiant and colossal, at the Nazi forces. Shostakovich wrote the Leningrad Symphony in a city at war and this epic live performance should be a landmark of Jaap van Zweden’s first season in Seoul. Elgar’s Cello Concerto, meanwhile, tells a tale of falling leaves and autumn mist from the English countryside: a wonderfully poetic showcase for the great German cellist Daniel Müller-Schott.
