When Brahms completed his fourth symphony, one critic compared it to gazing into a deep well on a clear night - “the darker it grows, the more brightly the stars shine back”. That’s the wonder of art: even a tragic masterpiece can bring hope, and no-one understands that better than Jaap van Zweden. He’s paired it with two further works of work of troubled genius - a passionate cry from the heart by one of Korea’s most respected living composers, and Britten’s stormy, restless Violin Concerto, played by a great friend of the SPO: the masterly Augustin Hadelich.
