Antonín Dvořák(1841-1904), String Quartet No. 12 in F Major, Op. 96, ‘American’(1893)
As the subtitle 'American' suggests, this piece was composed in the United States. The time Czech composer Antonín Dvořák spent in America was an especially creative period for him. While living primarily at 327 East 17th Street in New York and teaching composition at a nearby conservatory, Dvořák spent the summer of 1893 on vacation in Spillville, Iowa. It was during this time that he composed his String Quartet No. 12 in F major, now known as the 'American.'

The subtitle 'American' was not given by Dvořák himself. Rather, it originated from an inscription on the title page of the autograph score, in which Dvořák wrote: "Second work composed in America, String Quartet in F major." Based on this note, later generations began referring to it as the 'American' Quartet. The piece features melodies reminiscent of African American spirituals, and in the past, it was even nicknamed the 'Nigger' or 'Negro' Quartet―terms that are now recognized as offensive and no longer used.

Ernő Dohnanyi(1877-1960), Piano Quintet No. 1 in C minor, Op. 1(1895)
Among his compositional output, chamber music holds a particularly prominent place―a reflection of his affinity for performing chamber works as a pianist. The Piano Quintet No. 1, featured in this performance, is one of his early works, composed during his student years at the Royal Hungarian Academy of Music.
This piece played a crucial role in bringing Dohnányi's remarkable talent as a composer to public attention, and Johannes Brahms was instrumental in that process. Dohnányi's teacher, Hans Koessler―a close friend of Brahms―was vacationing with him in Bad Ischl during the summer of 1895.
When Koessler spoke to Brahms about his exceptionally gifted student and his piano quintet, which had been presented as an end-of-term composition, Brahms expressed interest and asked to see the score.
Koessler promptly wrote a postcard to Dohnányi, who was on summer break, requesting the manuscript. Upon reviewing the quintet, Brahms famously remarked, "I could not have done it better myself." Deeply impressed, Brahms went on to arrange a performance of the work in Vienna on November 25, 1895, featuring Dohnányi himself at the piano alongside the Fitzner Quartet.
