Helena Juntunen
VocalistHelena Juntunen is currently one of Finland's most
dazzling young sopranos to have established an international career. Her
responsive soprano voice enraptures audiences with its freshness, and her
phrasing is praised for its expressive and natural quality.
The role of Marguerite in Gounod's Faust at the
Savonlinna Opera Festival in 2002 can be considered as Helena's professional
breakthrough. She made her debut with the Connecticut Opera in the USA in the
same role during the 2003-2004 season. In fact, the season could be considered
as the season of debuts as Helena also made her debut in Genoa in Rossini's Il
viaggio a Reims as Madame Cortese, in Antwerp as Zdenka in Strauss' Arabella,
and as Pamina in Mozart's The Magic Flute at the Saxon State Opera Dresden.
Helena Juntunen has been a regular performer at the
Finnish National Opera since 1999. She appeared in such roles as Zdenka in
Arabella and as Madame Cortese in Il viaggio a Reims under the direction of
Nobel-winning Dario Fo. The list of roles include Nedda in Il Pagliacci, Mimi
in La Bohème, Liisa in Pohjalaisia, Pamina in The Magic Flute and world
premiers such as Alide in Juri Reinvere's Purge (Puhdistus) and Helena in
Sebastian Fagerlund's Autumn Sonata along with Anne Sofie von Otter.
Her roles outside Finland include Jenny Hill in Kurt
Weill's The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahoganny in Nancy, Countess in Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro in
Nice and Lyon, Marie in Wozzeck in Nice, Donna Elvira in Lyon, Infantin Clara
in Zemlinski's Der Zwerg in Nancy, Greta Graumann in Schreker's Der Ferne Klang
in Strasbourg and Pamina at La Monnaie, Festival dAix en Provence and at the
Grand Théâtre de Genève, Wiener Festwochen and
Theater an der Wien, Tatjana at Vasa Opera, Mimi at Göteborg Opera,
Marie/Marietta in Die Tote Stadt in Nancy and Nantes.
In the last two seasons, Juntunen performed as Madama
Butterfly and Donna Elvira at the Savonlinna Opera Festival, Marie/Marietta in
Die Tote Stadt in Simon Stone's critically acclaimed production in Basel, the
soprano part in the staged version of Dvorák's Stabat Mater in Montpellier,
Salome in Olivier Py's production in Strasbourg, Gustav Wasa in Helsinki and
Kata Kabanova at Opera National de Lorraine.
Juntunen’s recent concert highlights include Luonnotar
by Sibelius in Sydney and London Vladimir Ashkenazy, in Amsterdam with Leif
Segerstam, Ottawa with John Storgårds, Mendelssohn's A Midsummer Nights Dream
at the Lucerne Festival under Vladimir Jurowski, Unsuk Chins SnagS&Snarls
in Stavanger, Helsinki and London, creation of Haflidi Hallgrimssons new song
cycle in Edinburgh, Glasgow and Reykjavik, Beethoven's Missa Solemnis with La
Verdi under Xian Zhang and with Sir Colin Davies in London, Bonn, Paris and New
York, Strauss' Vier letzte Lieder with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic
Orchestra under Leif Segerstam, and her debuts with the Berliner Philharmoniker
under Donald Runnicles with Ein deutsches Requiem, and with the BBC Symphony
Orchestra under Vänskä with Szymanowski's Stabat Mater.
Helena's recordings for the Ondine label have included
a solo album of lieder by Leevi Madetoja and complete recordings of Einojuhani
Rautavaara's operas Aleksis Kivi and Auringon talo (House of the Sun). BIS
label released the Spirit of Nature album in the Sibelius edition, which features
not only Luonnotar but also the world premiere recording of the orchestral
versions of the songs Höstkväll (Autumn Evening) and Hertig Magnus (Duke
Magnus), conducted by Osmo Vänskä. Her other recordings include operas as
Anna-Liisa, Erik XIV, Perttu Haapanens Ladies’ Room, and Beethoven's 9th,
Höstsonaten and Kullervo with the BBC Scottish symphony orchestra.
