YeonSun Joo
Cello
Cellist Yeonsun Joo has enjoyed a successful career as a concert soloist, chamber musician, orchestral musician. Ms. Joo served as the principal cellist of Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra from 2008 to 2017 and as the associate principal cellist of the Kansas City Symphony from 2005-2008. As a soloist Ms. Joo has performed with numerous orchestras such as the Philadelphia Orchestra, the KBS (the Korean National Broadcasting System) Orchestra, the Eastern Connecticut Symphony Orchestra, the Seoul Philharmonic, the Incheon Philharmonic, the World Symphony, and the Shepherd Symphony Orchestra. Ms. Joo has been featured on live radio and television broadcasts in performances with the MBC-TV Ensemble, the KBS-TV program 'Odyssey Classic' and 'Theme Concert', the KBS-FM Classic Radio in Seoul, Korea, Houston Public Radio KUHF88.7FM in Texas, KMBC-TV in Kansas City. She regularly at concerts by Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, the Quartet K, and the Cellista.
As a recitalist and chamber musician, Ms. Joo has appeared in concert halls such as the Seoul KumHo Recital Hall, the Sydney Opera House, the Lincoln Center and the Weill Hall at Carnegie. In great demand as a chamber musician, Ms. Joo has collaborated with world renowned artists as Robert Diaz, Kim Kashkashian, Elmar Olivieira, Itzhak Perlman, Lorin Maazel and KyungSun Lee etc. Ms. Joo has formed three chamber groups. Joo trio, a string trio with her sisters, Yeonju and Yeonkyung, a piano trio called Trio Philia and a string quartet named Quartet Knecht. Joo trio gives a Christmas concert every year and many voluntary concerts for patients, seniors or children. In 2012, Joo trio has participated in soundtrack of documentary movie called ‘Bi-nyum’. Trio Philia gave its first concert in 2012 and won the Gandprix award at The 2nd ArtSylvia chamber audition in 2013. Starting this April, Quartet Knecht will give 3 concerts series of FEELosophy in 2013 with a philosophy Sinju Kang and a Haydn album will be released soon. She recorded Suites her first solo album, the completed Bach Cello which was released in March 2016. As soon as the album was released, she peformed the complete Bach Cello Concerto in her recital to great acclaim.
Ms. Joo is the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including first prizes in the Sorantin International Competition, the Eastern Connecticut Symphony Orchestra Competition, the Greenfield Competition, the Hankook Ilbo Contest, and Seikae Ilbo Competitions. Ms. Joo received gold medals in the Youth Chamber Music Contests, and the first prize for a cello and special grand prize in the Pusan MBC Broadcast Competition. She also won the young artist audition of Seoul Arts Center and gave a recital as a young artist of the year 2010.
Ms. Joo has been educated under the finest schools and teachers. After graduating at the Seoul Arts High School under Myung-Wha Chung, she went on to receive her bachelor's degree at the Curtis Institute of Music under Orlando Cole and her Master's degree under Lynn Harrell at the Shepherd School of Music, Rice University. She has also participated in masterclasses with Arto Noras, Gary Hoffmann, Lawrence Lesser, and Mstislav Rostropovich. Ms. Joo is also an alumnus of many of the world's prestigious music festivals such as the Music Academy of the West, the Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival, the Verbier Academy, the Aspen Music Festival, the Flaine Music Festival in France, the Perlman Music Program, and the Master Course in Vienna. Ms. Joo is now a faculty member of The Korean National University or Arts, Yewon school and Seoul Arts High School.
