Wilson Ng
ConductorBorn in Hong Kong, Wilson Ng is the Associate Conductor of the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra and the Artistic Director of the Gustav Mahler Orchestra Hong Kong. He is a prize winner at the Mahler Competition in Bamberg, the Sir Georg Solti International Conductors' Competition in Frankfurt, the Svetlanov International Conducting Competition in Paris and the James Conlon Conductor Prize at the Aspen Music Festival.
Wilson was appointed as the Associate Conductor of the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra(SPO) at the age of 28 and made his début at the Seoul Arts Center Orchestra Festival 2019 with SPO. His performance of Shostakovich’s Symphony no.1 at his subscription concert début was praised by the Yonhap News “as if he had become Shostakovich himself”, and SPO engaged him immediately for next subscription concerts. He returned to the Seoul Arts Center Orchestra Festival 2020 with SPO and conducted the opening concert of the festival. During the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, he led SPO for its first live-streamed online concerts, and made a series of virtual reality experience recordings.
Apart from SPO, Wilson was also invited to conduct other major Korean orchestras, such as Korean Symphony Orchestra, Bucheon Philharmonic Orchestra, Gyeonggi Philharmonic Orchestra, and was re-invited to conduct KBS(Korean Broadcasting System) Symphony Orchestra after their first collaboration. He performed at several significant Korean National events, including the 40th Anniversary of Gwangju Democratic Uprising concert, and the 100th Anniversary of Independence Movement Day Concert. His performances with various orchestras were broadcasted by all Korean nationwide television channels, EBS, KBS, MBC, and SBS.
Wilson worked with many leading orchestras around the world, including Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich, Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra, WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne, Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, Danish National Symphony Orchestra, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra. His Junge Deutsche Philharmonie début performance at the Alte Oper Frankfurt New Year’s concert, with Scriabin’s Poème de l'extase on the program, received a standing ovation and critical acclaim by the Frankfurter Rundschau which headlined the concert as “The Pinpoint Ecstasy”
In Hong Kong, Wilson founded the Gustav Mahler Orchestra in 2014, with which he conducted over 30 performances in their last season. Under his artistic direction, the orchestra pioneered a new performance concept, “Musicians without Borders”, placing its musicians among the audience, an innovation which is in great demand following its premiere. The orchestra also collaborated with Vadim Repin and Joshua Bell, released a live recording of Mahler’s Symphony No. 1, and appeared at the Hong Kong Arts Festival and the Busan Maru International Music Festival in Korea. For his contributions to the development of arts and culture, he received a Certificate of Commendation from the Hong Kong Secretary for Home Affairs in 2017 and a Young Artist Award from the Hong Kong Arts Development Council in 2018.
Fond of contemporary music, Wilson has been invited to conduct the opening performance of the Beijing Modern Music Festival 2019 with the China National Symphony Orchestra, he has also been invited by the Magdeburg Theatre for conducting two performances at the 2019 IMPULS - Festival für Neue Musik. He conducted concerts in Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Tianjin, Xiamen, Sichuan in celebration of China's 40th Anniversary of 'Reform and Opening Up' focusing on Chinese living composers. He also conducted several world premieres composed by Xiaogang Ye, President of the Chinese Musicians' Association.
Wilson started his first flute lessons when he was 11. He studied flute in Paris and Lausanne and performed as a guest solo flutist with the Lyon National Opera Ballet before specialising in conducting. Later on, he advanced his conducting studies at the Universität der Künste Berlin and the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, and was chosen for the conducting academies at the Pacific Music Festival and the Aspen Music Festival. He was also selected to join the masterclasses with Bernard Haitink, David Zinman and Roger Norrington.
Wilson served as assistant and cover conductor to Manfred Honeck, Jaap van Zweden, Jukka-Pekka Saraste, Markus Stenz, Dima Slobodeniouk, Thomas Dausgaard, Andrey Boreyko, Thierry Fischer and John Nelson, with whom he worked on Warner recordings of Berlioz’s Requiem, Damnation de Faust and Les Troyens featuring mezzo soprano Joyce DiDonato and tenor Michael Spyres. While working closely with Osmo Vänskä in Seoul, he also receives mentoring from the Maestro, which allows him to further evolve his particular passion for Sibelius’s music.
