Yubeen Kim
FluteFlutist Yubeen Kim, who
became the first Korean to win 1st Prize in the flute category at the 71st ARD
International Music Competition in 2022, is currently rewriting the history of
Korean classical music. Among Korean flutists, he is delivering the most outstanding
performances on the international stage.
Yubeen Kim achieved
the Grand Slam for the first time by taking 2nd Prize (with no 1st Prize
awarded) at the Concours de Genève
International Music Competition, the world's largest international music competition, 1st Prize at the Prague Spring
International Music Competition, and 1st Prize at the ARD International Music
Competition. In August 2023, Yubeen Kim was appointed principal flute of the
San Francisco Symphony, led by music director Esa-Pekka Salonen.
Yubeen Kim began his career
in Korea at The Journal of Music Concours in 2008, winning 1st Prize at Ewha
& Kyungyang Concours, won the Asia Flutists Congress Shanghai Competition,
won 1st Prize at SNU College of Music Concours, won 1st Prize at The Chunchu
Concours, and took 1st Prize at Asia Flute Federation Flute Competition. He
distinguished himself by winning the championship and receiving a special award
at the Kobe International Flute Competition. Following his 2nd Prize (with no
1st prize awarded) and The Audience Prize at the 69th Concours de Genève International Music
Competition in 2014, he made his mark on the international stage by winning the
prestigious Prague Spring International Music Competition in May 2015. In
December 2016, he was appointed the youngest principal flutist of the
Konzerthausorchester Berlin. In October of the following year, he became a
tenured member of the Konzerthausorchester and performed with world-renowned
musicians until he concluded his tenure in 2023. In August 2023, Yubeen Kim was
announced as principal flute of the San Francisco Symphony, at the request of
world-renowned maestro Esa-Pekka Salonen, has been moving to the western United
States since January 2024. He has been officially appointed as a tenured member
of the San Francisco Symphony since June 2024.
Yubeen Kim has
performed with legendary maestros, including Christoph Eschenbach, Iván Fischer, Michael Sanderling, Myung-whun Chung, Dmitrij
Kitajenko, Eliahu Inbal, Philippe Herreweghe, and Franz Welser-Möst. He has performed with esteemed orchestras, including the
Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, Orchestre de Chambre de Genève,
Konzerthausorchester Berlin, Bochumer Symphoniker, Seoul Philharmonic
Orchestra, KBS Symphony Orchestra, Bucheon Philharmonic Orchestra, Korean
Chamber Orchestra, Prime Philharmonic Orchestra, Daejeon Philharmonic
Orchestra, Cheongju Philharmonic Orchestra, Changwon Philharmonic Orchestra,
Orchestre du CNSMD de Lyon, and the Ensemble of Tokyo.
He has been invited to perform
at numerous concerts and festivals, including the Prague Spring Festival, the
Nimus Festival, the Bemus Festival, the Festival du Jura, the Weiwuying
International Music Festival, the Saint-Germain Summer Festival, and Souffle
D'Ici et D'ailleurs. He also performed with Philippe Bernold at the Daegu
Midsummer Night's Flute Festival, with the Arditti Quartet and Toshio Hosokawa
at the 2019 Tongyeong International Music Festival, and was appointed as a
judge at the Junior Flute Competition. He was invited as a guest principal
flute of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra in May 2021 (conducted Susanna Mälkki), October 2021
(conducted John Williams), and October 2022 (conducted Iván Fischer). Due to his
outstanding performances both domestically and internationally, Yubeen Kim was
awarded the title of "Young Musician Who Will Lead the Next
Generation" by performing arts magazine <Auditorium> in 2016,
recognized as a "2030 Next Generation Leader" by <Forbes Korea>
in 2020, and named in the "30 Under 30" list by Forbes Asia in June
2023. His performance was highlighted as an artist deserving attention within
the current Asian classical music community.
In 2018, he successfully completed recital,
'FRENCH&GERMAN', at the Seoul Arts Center. In 2019, he held a successful
recital tour in three major cities in Japan and performed “W. A. Mozart Flute
Concerto No. 2” at the 747th subscription concert of the KBS Symphony
Orchestra. The performance received rave reviews from audiences and critics.
Additionally, in 2019, he
participated in the <2019 Korean Young Musicians> album project by KBS
Classic FM.
In 2020, he presented a solo
recital at Kumho Art Hall as part of the ‘2020 Kumho Rising Star
Series’, and performed with Wilson Ng, former assistant conductor of the Seoul
Philharmonic Orchestra, at the Gwangju Symphony Orchestra’s subscription concert
commemorating the 40th anniversary of May 18th in South Korea. In 2021, he
appeared in recitals, chamber music, and orchestral performances at the
Tongyeong International Music Festival and performed with the Changwon
Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Daejin Kim, at the Seoul Arts Center
Korean Orchestra Festival. In August 2021, he successfully presented a recital
featuring Baroque repertoire at LOTTE Concert Hall. At the 2022 Tongyeong
International Music Festival, he once again demonstrated his marvelous
techniques by performing “Khachaturian Flute Concerto” with the KBS Symphony
Orchestra. After being awarded 1st Prize in the 2022 ARD International Music
Competition, Yubeen Kim performed in orchestral concerts and recitals,
including the 2023 Tongyeong International Music Festival, the Daejeon
Philharmonic Orchestra subscription concert, the Gongju Chungnam Philharmonic
Orchestra subscription concert, and a recital tour.
His
first CD (Poème) will be released at the Label Sony Classical in
August 2024, presenting flute works from french masters such as Debussy,
Poulenc, Dutilleux, Sancan, Franck.
After graduating from Yewon School, Yubeen Kim received a
bachelor's degree from Conservatoire National Supérieur Musique et Danse de
Lyon, and after graduating from Conservatoire National Supérieur Musique de
Paris, he studied Konzertexamen degree at Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler
Berlin. He currently serves as a principal flute of the San Francisco Symphony
while remaining active through performances with other orchestras and as a
soloist, both domestically and internationally.
