Yun Zeng
HornHorn-playing runs in Yun Zeng's family.
Both his father and his grandfather were professional horn-players. The soft,
modulated sound has fascinated Yun Zeng since his early childhood. He received
his first horn lessons at the age of six from his father, principal horn of the
Sichuan Symphony Orchestra. A television broadcast of Schumann's Concert Piece
for Four Horns with the Berliner Philharmoniker featuring Stefan Dohr and Georg
Schreckenberger inspired him so much that from then on he dreamed of becoming
part of this orchestra. As a 10-year-old, Yun Zeng stood in for a sick horn
player in the Sichuan Symphony Orchestra and discovered how rewarding it is to
play in an orchestra.
In 2011, Yun Zeng went to Beijing to attend
Quan Wen's class at the Central Conservatory of Music. In 2019/20, he studied
at the Haute École de Musique de Genève with Bruno Schneider. He won several
major international competitions, including first prize at the 2019 Tchaikovsky
Competition and 2nd Prize at ARD (2022), Prague Spring (2018) and Jeju (2013).
In 2022, he became principal horn of the Staatskapelle Berlin. In 2024, He
joined the Berliner Philharmoniker as principal horn player and took over Radek
Baborak's chair, which had been vacant for nearly 15 years.
Yun Zeng is regarded as a rising star of
horn world. Addressed by Gergiev as the 'biggest surprise' at the closing Gala
of 16th Tchaikovsky Competition, The New Yorker wrote: "Yun Zeng delivered a spectral solo that glowed through the murk and then was
swallowed up in it. What emerges from such playing is an acoustic
three-dimensionality."
Alongside playing, he is also passionate about teaching. He was invited to
several music camps such as Domaine Forget (Canada), Akiyoshidai Horn Camp
(Japan) and Gonjiam Festival. He gave lessons regularly at Hochschule für Musik
Hanns Eisler, Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg and Alicante Brass
Academy.
