Three composers paint landscapes of the heart. Robert Schumann loved the rolling hills and historic cities of Germany’s Rhineland—and his soaring Third Symphony visits both Cologne Cathedral and a village wine festival. Helen Grime closes her eyes and listens to the poetry of the night: guest conductor Nicholas Carter is eager to share the music of this remarkable Scottish British composer. And Richard Strauss, at the end of a long life, walks serenely into the sunset with four of the most heartbreaking songs even he ever wrote. When the Finnish soprano Helena Juntunen sings them, you might want to bring a handkerchief!
