“Oh you millions, I embrace you—here’s a kiss for all the world!”. Some symphonies need no introduction, and from tragic opening to its final, jubilant Hymn to Joy, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony is one of those works: a masterpiece that truly belongs to all of humanity. Here in Seoul it’s become a traditional way to end to our season, and in a troubled world, this mighty plea for universal brotherhood has never felt more timely. Jaap van Zweden conducts tonight, uniting orchestra, chorus and four world class Korean soloists in Beethoven’s timeless hymn to tolerance, compassion and hope.
